Dear Sir, - an intriguing Pride and Prejudice variation novel

My first novel was Dear Sir, a Pride and Prejudice variation that begins after the infamous Hunsford proposal. In this version, Mr Darcy's future changes course when he receives a letter from an unexpected correspondent: Jane Bennet.

The premise proved surprisingly controversial. After first publishing the story on FanFiction, I received many kind messages from readers – and a few rather less kind ones. Some devoted Austen fans were horrified by the very notion of Darcy ending up with anyone other than Elizabeth Bennet.

Yet that was precisely the question I wanted to explore.

In Jane Austen's original novel, we know Jane Bennet largely through Elizabeth's eyes. She is beautiful, gentle, and universally admired, but much of her inner life remains hidden. In Dear Sir, Jane's disappointment in London becomes a turning point. She grows stronger, wiser, and more self-aware while remaining recognisably Jane – kind-hearted, thoughtful, and generous. My aim was not to transform her into Elizabeth, but to imagine how Jane herself might become a worthy partner for a man such as Darcy.

At the same time, Elizabeth's story does not end in heartbreak. She, too, finds her own great love. I could never deny her a happy ending.

Many readers initially approached the story with scepticism, convinced that a Darcy–Jane pairing could never work. To my delight, some of the most memorable reviews came from readers who admitted they expected to dislike the book, only to find themselves won over by the relationship and the emotional journey that followed.
